We’ve been told for years by the milk industry that we should be drinking milk to get our daily calcium supply for strong bones and teeth.
I don’t know about you, but this powerful message resonated in my home growing up because my mom always insisted that my brother and I drink lots of milk. After all, my mom, like a lot of moms, wanted her children to be healthy.
But, is milk really good for us?
The answer is YES and NO!
There is plenty of mounting evidence to support that consuming conventional dairy is VERY harmful to your health.
For one, conventional dairy farmers raise their cattle in very unsafe, unsanitary conditions:
What kind of milk do you think a sick cow produces? All you have to do is go to your local chain grocery store to find out!
Another cause for alarm with conventional dairy is that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) basically allows conventional farmers to get away with these reduced standards of cleanliness by using pasteurization (heating the milk to very high temperatures to “kill” potentially harmful bacteria.)
The problem with this: the heat kills all important enzymes and damages vitamins and amino acids (the building blocks of protein.) By definition, milk is officially pasteurized when no enzymes are present. The enzymes in milk help you break down and utilize its nutrients. For example, the enzyme phosphatase is essential for calcium absorption, but it is destroyed by pasteurization. So, drinking pasteurized milk may lead to osteoporosis (Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon.)
Pasteurization may have been justified back in 1908 when milk-borne diseases like tuberculosis spread through the milk supply due to unsanitary conditions. But we now know that the modern milking mechanisms we have today, along with efficient packaging and distribution, make pasteurization unnecessary.
Unpasteurized or “raw” milk naturally contains lactic acid-producing bacteria that actually protect it from pathogens (disease-causing organisms.) Of course, this beneficial bacteria is completely destroyed by pasteurization, thereby leaving the milk defenseless against bad bacteria potentially contaminating the supply.
For those of you who think drinking pasteurized milk is safer than raw, organic milk, here’s an interesting statistic to consider: Of the MANY outbreaks of salmonella from contaminated milk, ALL have occurred in pasteurized milk! (Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon.) So, pasteurization is not a guarantee for cleanliness.
In addition to unsanitary conditions and pasteurization, when consuming conventional dairy you must also consider the process of homogenization (passing the milk through a fine filter under high pressures.)
Homogenization causes the fat molecules to become so small that they can bypass digestion. So the proteins that would normally get digested in your stomach are not properly broken down, which leads to the possibility of incomplete protein digestion in your small intestine. Incomplete protein digestion can trigger milk allergies or intolerance as undigested proteins make their way into your bloodstream.
So you may have an allergy or intolerance to milk because of the processing, NOT necessarily because of the milk itself. In fact, many people who cannot tolerate conventional milk do quite well with raw, organic milk—I’m one of those people!
Homogenization of milk is also linked to atherosclerosis (a.k.a “hardening of the arteries.”) When the enzyme Xanthine Oxidase does not get broken down properly and passes into circulation, it damages arterial walls and heart muscle by causing scar tissue and build up of calcified plaque along the arterial walls. Cholesterol and fatty acids then flood these damaged areas, which narrows the arterial pathway, blocking the flow of blood (Dr. Jensen’s Guide to Better Bowel Care by Dr. Bernard Jensen.)
Now after hearing all of that do you really want to drink conventional milk? THIS is the kind of milk that is NOT good for you!
BUT, not all milk is created equal. There’s a much healthier source…
Raw, organic milk! Milk that comes from happy, healthy cows that is not heated or filtered is filled with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, healthy bacteria and enzymes for healthy digestion. If you’re going to drink milk, this is the stuff you want to put in your body!
To learn more about the practices of raw, organic dairy farming and how they differ from conventional farms, I interviewed Chandler Gabel from the Educational Farm at Joppa Hill in Bedford, NH.
In this raw interview, Chandler explains how the way they raise their cows is VERY different from a conventional farm. He explains why conventional dairies are still using practices that are unsafe and unnecessary and he answers the burning question: Are there risks to drinking raw milk? He also offers some resources and tips for buying raw milk to make sure you're getting the real, good stuff!
