If your answer is a resounding YES, then keep reading because we’re getting ready to kick-off a brand-new winter Transformation Challenge!

 

This is a 12-week challenge where we focus on developing healthy eating and exercise habits to build your best body.  It’s a chance to look and feel better -- to become lighter and leaner, more fit, more energetic, more confident and healthier from the inside out!  

This past fall the first place winner of the Friend Your Body Transformation Challenge lost 8% body fat, dropped 4 dress sizes, dropped 3 pants sizes and lost 21 pounds!  Better yet, she has given herself the gifts of health, wellness, happiness and the gift of life!

 

Here’s her success story in her words:

"Having just had two of the worst years of my life, I was eager to sign up for the FYB Fall challenge.  I had recently lost my mother, helped my father regain his health after a near fatal illness and been through a divorce that left me emotionally and financially drained.  I was at my heaviest weight ever, unhappy and absolutely exhausted.  I could barely make it through the day.

When I read the sample menus I was a bit skeptical.  It sounded like I was going to starve!  I wasn’t sure that I could do it.  But that all changed when I went to my first FYB meeting.  Melissa’s presentation was just what I needed to get going to change my life!  I particularly liked the emphasis on respecting our bodies and respecting ourselves.  As a single mom with ill parents I was definitely in that group known as the “sandwich” generation and time for myself went out the window.  At the first session I decided that I was going to take charge of my life, make the time for me and really give this whole getting healthy thing a fair chance.  After all who would be there for my children if I wasn’t well enough to care for them?

I began by setting some reasonable goals for myself with the motto of “Progress not Perfection”.   I wanted to lose weight.  I wanted to move my body.  I wanted to have energy again.  I wanted to be happy.  Pretty lofty goals, but in a way, very simple and totally achievable.

The metabolic test in session two was so eye opening for me.  I was shocked that the test pinpointed some of the very issues that I have.  It was like it was reading my mind!  I tested to be a protein type, which didn’t surprise me, as I loved carbs and seemed to crave them all the time.  Instinctively I knew I wasn’t eating right for my body/weight loss and now I had the evidence that I was eating completely wrong.  When I was in my 20’s I was the thinnest I have ever been and achieved that on a low fat diet.  I’m not sure why I assumed I should continue to eat that way, after having children and heading straight to my 40’s and pre-menopause.

It was at that point that I made the biggest change in my life.  I completely revamped what I ate.  No more bread, no more pasta, no more potatoes!  I also decided to go gluten free.  It was an easy way to keep the bad carbs out of my pantry and stick to a high protein diet.  Well, low and behold, by going gluten free, my digestive problems seemed to disappear overnight!  Gone were the bloating, gas, cramping and acid reflux.  It was amazing!  My stomach almost immediately felt better than it had in years!  And you know what happens when you feel better?  You eat better and you move more!

Receiving such positive feedback was so rewarding, that I continued to make other small changes.  I made sure to always eat carbohydrates with protein, never alone.  I made my breakfast a high protein meal which is difficult when you are intolerant to eggs and don’t like the taste of them either!  A former vegetarian, I even began to eat red meat occasionally!  (And it tastes good :-) )  I was already eating many organic foods (I organically garden during the summer months.) and added many more, including meats.  I changed over to Celtic sea salt.  I gave up sugar.   I gave up eating out for the most part.  And when I did, I planned ahead exactly what I would eat.   In spite of all of those things that I “gave up”, I realized that I was gaining a whole lot more.  Not gaining weight, but gaining happiness and self confidence.  I began to notice that I wasn’t yawning as much during the day, the stairs at work were easier and then one day I realized that my “fat” jeans were too big for me.

My newfound confidence, happiness and energy were infectious.   I wanted to share my happiness and encourage others, so I made sure to help others in the FYB challenge by commenting on their action goals and giving them some much needed positive reinforcement.  As a teacher I know the impact of hearing, “Way to Go” or “You can do it”.  I feel that by commenting on others’ goals and encouraging others I truly made a difference in the success of others’ FYB journey.

I really enjoyed the exercise component of the program.  I learned a lot about the flexibility I do have and where I need to improve.  I also was surprised at how strong I was in certain muscles groups and how weak in others!  Stretching each night has helped me to sleep better and feel more positive about the changes I am making in my body.  It’s always a struggle for me to exercise as the weather gets colder and the days get shorter – my body seems to want to go into hibernation!  The simple exercises have allowed me to keep moving in spite of how dark and cold it is!

As I continued to make small changes in my life, others began to notice.  My work colleagues commented on how I looked thinner and wanted to know if I losing weight.  My friends commented on how happy I seemed.  I have never had so many comments on my hair and how healthy it looks. I began to practically run up and down the stairs at work and I realized that I rarely yawned anymore.

Working in a school, I noticed that everyone around me was sick.  But not me!  Although I’ve felt a cold try to take hold, my immune system has been able to fight off each bug within 3 days time.  While my colleagues are coughing and on numerous medications, I have been able to recover from the viruses with no medications taken!

Due to the FYB challenge I have met each and every one of the goals I initially set.  I have lost weight.  I am moving more.  I have more energy.  I am happy.  I have changed my life.  Although the challenge has ended, I am continuing to eat true to my metabolic type.  I can’t imagine going back to my old way of eating, because for me the FYB Fall Challenge wasn’t a diet, but a new way of living.

Now for the numbers:

  • I have lost 10% of my body weight.
  • I have lost 21 pounds.
  • I have lost 4 dress sizes and 3 pants sizes (and am close to 4 for the pants too :-) )
  • With my doctor’s blessing, I am no longer on the anti-depressants that I have taken for years.
  • If I can do this, anyone can!  I am a single mom, who works full-time and is on a limited income, and I could still fully utilize the FYB program and get healthy!

As I write this, I am approaching my 41stbirthday.  No gift that I ever receive will equal the one I gave myself by joining the Fall FYB challenge:  the gift of health, wellness and happiness.  I gave myself the gift of life.

The winners will be based on five criteria:

 

1. Weekly Action Steps and Nutrition and Lifestyle Journal

Every week you will be encouraged to set specific action steps for yourself to help you get closer to your goals. Those who submit their action steps every week, along with their Nutrition and Lifestyle Journal, will be eligible for prizes.

 

2. Participation

Those who attend 90% of the weekly sessions or more will be eligible for prizes.

 

3. Before and After Measurements

The day before the challenge starts measurements will be taken to determine initial body fat percentage. Final measurements will be taken one week after the last meeting. Those who show the most physical progress will be eligible for prizes.

 

4. Short Narrative

To be eligible for prizes participants must submit a 500-word narrative sharing what they learned from their Friend Your Body journey and what they would like to teach other women about transforming their health. Narratives must be submitted by the date of the final measurements.

 

5. Before and After Photos

Participants will be responsible for taking their own before and after photos. To be eligible for prizes they must be submitted by the date of the final measurements.

 

 

Here’s How to Determine if You Should Participate…

 

If you’re a woman who is looking to count points or calories, eat processed, pre-packaged foods and do crazy, hard work outs—this program is NOT for you!

 

The Friend Your Body Lifestyle Program is based around eating clean to get lean and following a safe, effective and progressive exercise plan to burn fat and get fit.

 

So you will NOT be doing any of the following:

 

Counting meaningless calories or pointless points

 

Measuring your food

 

Eating pre-packaged foods

 

Doing exercises that are unsafe and ineffective

 

Sitting in boring, uninspiring meetings

  • Initial Measurements: Tuesday, February 7th from 4-8pm
  • First Meeting: Wednesday, February 8th from 6:30-8pm
  • Last Meeting: Wednesday, May 9th from 6:30-8pm

  • Winners announced by Wednesday, May 23rd

 

All meetings will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8pm at McLaughlin Middle School with the exception of Wednesday, February 29th and April 25th. Because of school vacations, we will not have access to the school so we will skip our meetings for those weeks and resume the following weeks. So mark your calendars!

 

All this for only $150—that’s $12.50 per week!
